The English hackamore operates on pressure points—specifically the bridge of the nose, the chin groove, and the poll. Unlike “long-shank” mechanical hackamores, the Lorina version utilizes shorter shanks to provide a more moderate level of leverage.

Proper Placement Guide

Fitting Steps for Your Hackamore

1. Check the Sheepskin: Ensure the fluffy side is centered on the bridge of the nose. This padding is there to protect the thin skin over the nasal bone from the leather strap.

2. Attach to the Bridle: The top loops of the metal shanks attach to your bridle’s cheekpieces. You may need to shorten your cheekpieces, as hackamores sit higher than a bit.

3. Adjust the Noseband: Most Shires models have a buckle hidden under the sheepskin or on the side. Adjust it so it’s snug but not “tight” while the horse is at rest.

4. The Curb Strap: This is the leather strap behind the jaw. It should be loose enough that the shanks can move about 45 degrees before the strap hits the jaw. If it’s too tight, the horse is under constant pressure.

⚠️ Critical Safety Note: Never fit a hackamore too low. The lower part of a horse’s nose is made of thin, fragile bone and cartilage. Heavy rein pressure on a low-fitting hackamore can actually fracture the nasal bone or collapse the airway.

Safety & Fitting Tip

To ensure effective communication, the noseband should sit approximately two fingers’ width below the cheekbone. Always check that the curb strap is adjusted to allow for a clear “neutral” position when the reins are loose.
